Live! Love! Laugh! The world is just a huge comedy for those with the sense to see it. Today, I give you readers the best and most funny animated movies (at least the ones we have seriously enjoyed). 

So without further ado, let’s dive into the 10 funniest animated movies in the world. Mind you, though, there are no rankings here – just pure fun.

10. Monsters Inc.

The story centers around two friends living in Monstropolis, the city in the monster world which harnesses the screams of the children to power their world. The Monsters Inc. is a factory that employs skilled monsters to be ‘scarers’ so that they can scare the children in the human world and harness their screams. 

The two friends Sulley and Mike accidentally bring in a little girl from the human and soon finds out that despite their world calling human children toxic, it’s their laughter that generates huge amounts of power, a power that is far more wonderful than the agonies of their screams.

The 2001 film was developed by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. The film later branched out into a franchise with a prequel ‘Monsters University’ released in 2013 and later a television series Monsters at Work premiered on the Disney+ platform. The film features the iconic voices of John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Jennifer Tilly among others.

9. Finding Nemo

A clownfish Marlin lives in the coral reef with his son Nemo. On the day of a school excursion, Nemo is captured by some curious humans and is taken to their home at P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney. Driven by love and determined to find his son, this father overcomes his fear of the unknown waters and traverses a great distance in the ocean to arrive at Sydney. On his travels, Marlin finds an uncanny partner in Dory. 

The ocean is a vast expanse and the two are but merely small fishes daring the waters with just their will and passion. The clueless duo must therefore find all the help they can get and reach the distant shores of Sydney to save Nemo.

Finding Nemo has remained a classic from Pixar since its release by Disney in 2003 and Dory and her antiques still is a fan favorite. Developers have added another story into the midst with ‘Finding Dory’ this time focusing on Dory, the blue tang fish, released by Disney in 2016. The film features the voices of Willem Dafoe, Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres to name a few.

8. Ice Age

The ice age is considered to have been one of the deadliest global disasters. Hats-off to Blue Sky Studios for making this into a non-stop laughter station. The story revolves around Manfred (Manny) the mammoth, Sid the ground Sloth and Diego the sabre-toothed lion, who come across a human baby and must return it to their tribe. 

On their mission to return the human child, the trio must overcome their differences and work as one to fight off all the odds that stand in their path. Among all this, the one to steal the show, however, is the sabre-toothed squirrel Scrat who is often seen trying to bury the one acorn he has found. 

Originally intended to be a 2D-animated film by Fox Animation Studios, the film then received critical accolades after its release in 2002 by 20th Century Fox. The franchise has over the years released several features, short films, TV-movies and spin-off tales.

The latest in the series is set to be released this year. The fabulous trio is wonderfully portrayed by Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary, with the likes of Jack Black and Alan Tudyk in other characters.

7. The Secret Life of Pets

A rather fresh addition to the animated world, the film centers around a solitary dog, Max, who is a devout fan of his owner, Katie. When Katie brings home another pet Duke, Max gets envious, and they fight and end up without their collars and running for their lives from an apparent underground committee of dejected pets led by a white bunny Snowball, who are hell-bent on taking revenge on their masters and all the humans in general. 

Lest they be hunted for their strong devotion to their human owner, the duo are on the run from the dejected gang. Meanwhile, deep in love with Max, Gidget travels through the city in search of help to find Max. The pets must go against all the dangers in the city and beyond (if need be) so that they may finally be reunited.

The film was developed by Illumination Entertainment and released in 2016 by Universal Pictures. The film had received a warm welcome and the developers had felt the need to venture on into a sequel, which was released in 2019. This film features Kevin Hart, Eric Stonestreet, Albert Brooks and Harrison Ford as the voices of the characters.

6. Hotel Transylvania

The prince of darkness, Count Dracula now runs a high-class hotel in the middle of the wilderness in Transylvania. Aptly named Hotel Transylvania, the staff of the hotel are all zombies, witches, and ghouls.

Dracula is very particular that no human ever enters the hotel, as most of the guests there have been victims of abuse from humans throughout history. A clueless Johnny accidentally finds the hotel during the birthday celebrations for Mavis, Dracula’s daughter, and is absolutely thrilled by the idea of monsters existing in the world. 

Dracula manages to hide Johnny by disguising him as a monster, but how long will the monsters be fooled? Are monsters and humans, then, fated to be forever apart and live fearing one another?

The film was developed by Columbia Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Animation and was released in 2012. The franchise has remained a favorite for animation film fans, with two to three more films, the most recent having been released in 2022. Talented artists like Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James and many others have given their voices to these iconic characters.

5. Minions

The thirst to serve can do wonders for all. The thirst to serve the most dangerous criminal mind is a different issue altogether. The minions are a race of yellow-skinned organisms evolved through time with the sole purpose of serving history’s greatest villains, but sadly for them through an unprecedented turn of events, they have managed to kill all the villains they have served—including a T-Rex, a pharaoh, Count Dracula. Their repeated failures to serve the ultimate villain drives them into isolation, where they slowly lose their sense of purpose in life. 

The minion Kevin along with his two mates Stuart and Bob must gather their courage and venture out of the isolated cave into the human world—with the purpose to regain their dignity and find the ultimate villain. But in a world filled with small-time punks and cowards, will they ever find their ultimate master?

One of the wittiest of the Despicable Me franchise, the film was developed by Illumination Entertainment and released in  2015 by Universal Pictures. To date, the minions remain a popular pop-culture character.

In this film, we get to hear the voices of Sandra Bullock, John Hamm, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Hiroyuki Sanada along with the iconic Steve Careel for the voice of Gru.

4. Zootopia

Fed up with the natural cycle of predators and prey, the animals of the land once reorganized themselves and created the ultimate utopia for themselves. Judy is a village bunny who dreams to become the best police officer in the city of Zootopia, the paramount in the world of animals. On her first day of a job as a parking duty officer, Judy is fooled by a street con artist, Nick Wilde. 

When Judy eventually comes to know of a case of missing animals, Judy decides to take up the case and seeks the aid of the clever fox Nick Wilde. Will luck prevail and protect these two from the kidnappers? Will they be able to put an end to this dark crime? 

The film was released in 2016 developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, premiered at the Brussels Animation Film Festival. Talented artists Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Bonnie Hunt, J.K. Simmons and the wonderful Shakira have provided their voices to a few of the many characters in the film.

3. Boss Baby

The babies come from Baby Corp. Most of them go to their designated families, but those unresponsive to tickling are sent over to management, where they receive a special baby formula that allows them to think like adults.

Tim Templeton is a normal who craves his parents’ attention, something that he fears will turn scarce once his parents adopt a new baby. The baby (named Ted) arrives in a full set of suit, tie and a briefcase. In front of the parents, the baby acts like a normal infant, but in private he is a special baby from the management tier of the Baby Corp sent to investigate why the world’s love for babies is threatened by the love for puppies.

Tim finds out about Ted and they both somehow come to an agreement that they should solve this mystery as soon as possible so that Ted can go his separate way. They find out that an ex Baby Corp member Francis, the current owner of the Puppy Co. has retained the baby pacifier and thanks to the special baby formula plans to make the Forever Puppy that will take away the love from the babies and exact his revenge on the Baby Corp for firing him. 

The Templeton duo are against all odds, here they are captured. Will Francis finally get his revenge against the Baby Corp? Or will the stroke of luck save the world from a never-ending servitude to the Forever Puppy?

The film was developed by DreamWorks Animation and released in 2017 by 20th Century Fox, being loosely based on the book of the same title by Marla Frazee. The film features Alec Baldwin as the Boss Baby (Ted) with Jimmy Kimmel, Tobey Maguire, Steve Buscemi and Lisa Kudrow in the roles of some of the other characters. 

2. Shrek

Far away in the land of Duloc there once lived a young dwarvish lord who had a certain aversion to fairy-tale creatures. The lord named Farquaad sought the fairest of all the princesses to marry and live happily ever after. He exiled all the magical creatures to the nearby swamp area.

Little did he know that in the swamp lived a territorial and grumpy green ogre Shrek who enjoyed the solitude of the swamp. He was a reclusive person and took this exile as a form of intrusion in his swamp. Shrek scares all the creatures to leave the swamp, save an overly talkative donkey, Donkey. Shrek arrives at Farquaad’s place and in return for leaving him alone, is tasked with rescuing Princess Fiona who is protected by a Dragon. Shrek succeeds and on their way back to Duloc the two starts falling for each other. 

Shrek however overhears Donkey and Fiona talking and assumes he was referred to as an ‘ugly beast’ and decides to hand over Fiona to Farquaad. Fiona had indeed come to love Shrek, and it was in fact she who was cursed to turn into an ogress and fated to a true love’s kiss in order to break the curse. But with the wedding preparations being done so promptly, will Farquaad come between the love that Fiona and Shrek share, or will they finally reunite and be the happily ever after?

The film is an adaptation of the early 90s picture book of the same name by William Steig. It was developed by DreamWorks Animation and released in 2001 by DreamWorks Pictures. The film features the voices of Mike Myers, John Lithgow, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas and Dame Julie Andrews as some characters. The Shrek franchise has from then on produced a handsome number of films, including some sequels and spin-offs.  

1. Kung Fu Panda

In the land of ancient China, in the Valley of Peace, there lived a happy father and his son Po. Po dreamt of joining Furious Five, the masters of kung fu, and protecting the people of the valley with their awesomeness. The master at the Jade Palace, Oogway has a premonition of a long-lost student Tai Lung returning to the valley and wreaking havoc amongst the people, and he then organizes a tournament to select a Dragon Warrior, a master of kung fu who can fend off Tai Lung and protect the Valley of Peace.

Tai Lung in fact was once a kung fu protege taken under the wing by Master Shifu and trained to be the Dragon Warrior, but seeing the darkness in his heart, Master Oogway decided against it and Tai Lung showed his true colors by attacking the masters. Po, excited to see the Furious Five in action, was instructed by his father Mr. Ping to sell noodles to the people attending the tournament.

By a chance of destiny (as there are no accidents here), Po was selected to be the next Dragon Warrior by Master Oogway and started his training in the Jade Palace under the tutelage of Master Shifu. The other candidates, the Five, resented this but in time came to be somewhat fond of the good-natured Po. With the untimely passing of Master Oogway, Master Shifu was left in charge of preparing the Dragon Warrior for the imminent confrontation with Tai Lung.

Will Po ever be able to become worthy of the name Dragon Warrior and make his Master Shifu and the wise Oogway proud? As the fate of the valley rests in the hands of the kung fu nerd, will he ever be able to fend off Tai Lung and fulfil the duty of the Dragon Warrior?

The film was developed by DreamWorks Animation and released in 2008 by Paramount Pictures. The brilliant Hanz Zimmer scored the music for this film. The film features iconic voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, James Hong, Dusti Hoffman, Ian McShane as a few among the characters. The franchise branched out to two other film sequels and a TV series from the success of the first film.
