When Does Luffy Use Gear 4 and Gear 5? | One Piece Theory Explained!

Luffy Gear 4

One of the major things we love in One Piece is the Power-Ups of Luffy. It started from Gear 2nd, and he’s been leveling up like crazy from arc to arc, and battle to battle.

So, when did Luffy use his Gear 4, and when will we see his Gear 5, 6, and whatever he comes up with? In this article, we’ll elaborate on all the details for you.

How Did Luffy Create Gear 4?

Before Marineford Arc, Luffy was only capable of using up to Gear 3, which one gives him speed and the other one strength. Even for Luffy’s dense brain, it wouldn’t be hard to figure out; using both speed and strength will give immense advantage in the battle.

After spending two years on the Island with Silvers Rayleigh, Luffy was given a task to become stronger on his own by fighting the animals on the island. His power and speed weren’t just enough; even after learning Haki.

Then Luffy infused Haki and created a new form that makes his rubber body more durable and even lets him fly.

Luffy first used Gear 4, known as “Boundman” in Dressarossa Arc in Episode 726 of the anime and Chapter 784 of the manga. It was against Doflamingo when he was trying to kill Trafalgar Law. Doflamingo chuckles by looking at how funny the form seems, but he gets his ass kicked in the end.

Since then, Luffy used it quite a lot of times in Whole Cake Island with a couple of new forms, which helped him get through two impossible battles. Here are the Gear 4 forms:

Boundman:

Boundman is the primary form of Gear 4 that helps him to coat his legs and arms with Busoshoku Haki. It is a mixture of Gear 2nd and 3rd because it is highly agile, exceptionally durable, and strong.

Tank Man:

During the battle with Charlotte Cracker, Luffy had to use Tank Man because of the unbelievable offense by the opponent’s Biscuit attacks. This form allows him to burn a large amount of energy, and he never used this form again until the current arc (Wano).

Snake Man:

During the battle with Katakuri, Luffy couldn’t even put a scratch on him with the usual Gear 4 form. However, when he transforms into Snake Man, he can change the direction of attacks in mid-air and gain incredible speed. This way, he countered impeccable Observation Haki of Katakuri.

On the other hand, this form doesn’t give him as much defense as Boundman or Tankman. He took a lot of impact during the battle in exchange for defeating Katakuri.

Just like when he faced Rob Lucci, Doflamingo, and Katakuri, this time, he’s got far more formidable opponent (s): The Kaido, The World’s Strongest Creature. Even by lasting forever with Gear 4, it is nearly impossible to defeat Kaido.

So, no matter what, Luffy had to awaken his devil fruit and come up with a new Gear. The way he is now, Luffy can’t use the Color of Conquerors (CoC) along with Gear 4, which gives him a great disadvantage.

Even though Oda didn’t reveal any details regarding it, we can make an obvious guess. Since he can’t use his Devil Fruit’s full abilities when using Gear 4, he has to awaken it sooner or later.

Gear 4 was a combination of Armament Haki and Gomu Gomu no fruit. So, Gear 5 might become the combination of his Awakened Devil Fruit with Color of Conquerers. Once he obtains it, he’ll have a greater chance of defeating Kaido or Big Mom.

Since Observation Haki gives an advantage in the battle, he might as well level it up during the fight. So, this is our prediction for Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation.

Conclusive Thoughts!

Luffy has come a long way with his strength and abilities. In the future, we’ll see more of his exceptional abilities, and we’re pretty sure Oda will make it worth the wait.

So, what is your favorite form of Luffy’s Gear? And which fight was the best with Gear 4? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
