Makoto Shinkai’s new venture Suzume no Tojimari has already made waves since its pre-release and seems to do so continuously. After its premiere in Japan, the film has already crossed 6.269 billion yen, about US$45.5 million in its first 17 days alone. While selling an aggregate of 4.60 million tickets in total.
Suzume no Tojimari’s current exploits at the Japanese box office have resulted in a record-breaking feat. The film has managed even to crunch up Kimi no na wa (Your Name), the previous masterpiece by Makoto Shinkai, by selling 38.7% more tickets and earning 47.4% more than the film.
Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International, and Crunchyroll will release the movie worldwide, except in Asia, in early 2023. Crunchyroll will release the film in North America, while Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll will handle distribution in Latin America, New Zealand, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, and portions of Europe.
Synopsis:
A 17-year-old girl from a small town in Kyushu discovers a seemingly normal door in ruins, its unusual appearance, and being mesmerized by its power, she opens the door, which releases destruction and natural calamities. Multiple doors begin to open simultaneously all across Japan. Now it’s up to Suzume to close these doors again.
Makoto Shinkai’s previous two films Weathering with you and the unforgettable Kimi no na wa (Your name), were critically and commercially well received, and Suzume no Tojimari looks on the same track as its predecessors. Makoto Shinkai’s films are not just anime but rather cinematic events.
