What is Moon Breathing in Demon Slayer? [Explained]

Moon Breathing Style in Demon Slayer

Moon Breathing is said to be the second-strongest breathing style out of the many in the popular anime demon slayer and, like all other breathing styles, Moon Breathing derives from Sun Breathing. This technique was created by Michikatsu Tsukiguni, who was the twin brother of Hashira Yoriichi Tsugikuni.

In the beginning, Michikatsu tried to learn Sun Breathing from his twin brother, but he discovered that it was difficult to master it. Instead, he began training in an alternate form of Breathing Style, which was the Moon Breathing technique.

This technique has only one user, which is Kokushibo, we see him using the technique once he turns into a demon and combines his demon art with the forms. So, what is moon breathing in Demon Slayer exactly?

What is Moon Breathing in Demon Slayer, Actually?

Moon Breathing Style in Demon Slayer

This technique and ability symbolize the moon and out of all the breath styles in the whole story, moon breathing has the clearest and most concise form. All the techniques in this form take the shape of the crescent moon.

It has quick and extremely powerful strikes and doesn’t have any weakness within it. Kokushibo had continued to add and develop techniques to the breathing style throughout a century.

When Michikatsu was training with this technique, he had thought he would catch up to Yoriichi’s level, but he had failed to do so. This created resentment in him toward his brother, and he wanted to get even more powerful.

As he trained, he also mastered the Total Breathing Technique and had the Demon Slayer Mark on him. It is believed that whoever awakens their Demon Slayer Mark is said to die upon reaching the age of 25. With this fear in mind, Michikatsu approached Muzan seeking eternal life by becoming a demon, and later he was known as Kokushibo in his Demon form.

With Moon Breathing, his Blood Demon Art allows him to create and manipulate dozens of blades in the shape of traditional crescent moons from his flesh Katana. These blades are said to be made from his blood and are either bright yellow or bright blue. Kokushibo’s attacks are extremely unpredictable and unreadable due to the way these crescent moon blades change the size, length, and speed so frequently. The magic blood demon art also enhances the power of his techniques.

The Different Forms of Moon Breathing

Different Forms of Moon Breathing

Kokushibo as a Demon combined his blood demon art with the Moon Breathing technique, creating a deadly combination. Out of all the breathing styles, only Moon Breathing has 16 different forms created by Kokushibo. In the manga, only 15 forms have been mentioned as of now.

Let’s delve into the fact that there are many forms of breathing that are extremely powerful, but there is nothing like Demon Art along with the power of a fully trained Hashira. Does it have the same power or more than the other kinds of breathing techniques?

First Form: Dark Moon, Evening Palace – This is a singular horizontal motion strike in a crescent shape, Kokushibo would quickly draw his sword and slashes swiftly creating numerous chaotic crescent blades that are created through his blood demon art.

Second Form: Pearl Flower Moongazing – Kokushibo sends a barrage of crescent-shaped knives at any incoming attack, defending himself.

Third Form: Loathsome Moon Chains – Kokushibo strikes two gigantic crescents with his sword, causing a projectile of smaller crescents to fall and cause huge destruction in a small area.

Fifth Form: Moon Spirit Calamitous Eddy – A curved slash layered over another to create a crescent moon blade and a rising vortex.

Sixth Form: Perpetual Night, Lonely Moon Incessant – Kokushibo attacks wildly several meters in front of him, unleashing a torrent of crescent-shaped blows. Sanemi Shinazugawa was overwhelmed by the technique, which was so powerful and far-reaching that it cut through nearby pillars.

Seventh Form: Mirror of Misfortune, Moonlit – Kokushibo strikes the ground with the gigantic version of his sword for the remaining 8 forms, creating long-ranged multi-directional cuts. He utilizes his blood demon art to his extent with a frontal, powerful slash.

Eighth Form: Moon-Dragon Ringtail – Kokushibo uses the gigantic version of his sword and creates a singular gigantic crescent-shaped slash that slowly decreases in size, creating dozens of crescent moon blades.

Ninth Form: Waning Moonswaths – This form is a stream of long-ranged crescent-shaped vertical and horizontal slashes along with numerous crescent moon blades with the gigantic version of his sword.

Tenth Form: Drilling Slashes, Moon Through Bamboo Leaves – Using the gigantic version of his sword, Kokushibo creates a long-range triple-layered slash twister full of crescent moon blades.

Fourteenth Form: Catastrophe, Tenman Crescent Moon – Kokushibo uses his enormous sword to unleash a destructive vortex of omnidirectional slashes that devastates anything caught within its range.

Sixteenth Form: Moonbow, Half Moon – From an extremely wide range, Kokushibo creates a barrage of downward crescent slashes that crash down on his opponents, creating several miniature craters along the way.

All of these forms are made and infused with blood demon art along with Moon Breathing.

Due to training and refining his swordsmanship skills for about 400 years, he boosted his physical capabilities, Kokushibo has certainly become the most powerful and skilled swordsman with his Moon Breathing technique in the modern era.
